Modern Dentistry…Not Just Saving Teeth…
We Are Saving Lives. In a recent National Public Radio program a dentist at a free medical and dental clinic in Los Angeles, was interviewed. The dentist told of an all-too-frequent experience faced by colleagues in every community. The patient came in with a tooth ache and wanted to have the tooth ache addressed. An evaluation revealed significant plaque and calculus around the patient’s teeth. From the health perspective, a thorough cleaning of the patient’s teeth would have a much more significant impact on his health then fixing his cavities. From the patient’s perspective…a visit to the dentist was only important in time of pain.
The recent debate in Congress on Health Care Reform has heightened awareness on rising costs, potential shortages, and other issues. What is missing, however, is a discussion on individual responsibility and prevention. Many more Americans are aware of preventive health measures than any other period of time in our history. Americans are aware of the importance of eating right, taking dietary supplements, and implementing vigorous exercise regimen to maintain health and delay aging. Most people, however, are still oblivious to the amazing health benefits of healthy teeth--and the detrimental impact of poor dental hygiene. An infection anywhere in the body can be serious and deadly…and is usually treated immediately. Gum infection, however, often is neglected for years and years because the infection is out of sight and there is usually no pain. Almost 80 years ago, the long-term benefits of a healthy mouth was concisely summarized by Dr. Charles Mayo, the founder of the famed Mayo Clinic. He noted that people who keep their teeth live an average of ten years longer than people who lose their teeth.
Oral-Systemic Connection
A tooth infection can have significant effect on a variety of other body organs. Gum infection has been linked to a host of serious diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, low-birth weight babies, Alzheimer’s disease, accelerated aging and more. Gum infection is a serious health risk. This is one of the reasons why we treat people that have certain medical conditions with systemic antibiotic prior to dental work so the bacteria from the mouth does not spread through the blood stream.
Advanced Diagnostics
How do you know if you have gum disease and...is it affecting your total health? Once gum disease starts it does not usually reverse itself without specialized care. Our office uses the latest, most up-to-date thorough diagnostic tools available. It starts with a simple “BANA” test to check for the presence of dangerous bacteria. We then will perform a detailed periodontal screening with the digital Florida Probe to check for pocket depth, bleeding, signs of infection, tooth mobility, and bone loss. Depending upon findings, additional tests may be recommended to determine the specific identity of the bacteria responsible for your disease, whether you have a genetic susceptibility to the disease and/or if your disease has spread throughout your body.
Advanced In-Office Treatment
Dr. Ahn, Dr. Morley and the staff at Impression Dental Care have been trained in the latest, most advanced periodontal therapies available. Comprehensive active treatment usually consists of 2 to 4 appointments and include deep cleaning and if necessary the use of a soft-tissue laser. The laser kills the bacteria and gently cleans the diseased tissue. This creates a sterile environment and prepares the teeth for the gums to re-attach, reducing your pocket depth and making it possible for you to clean more effectively at home. The laser treatment is virtually painless and in over 90% of the cases allows the restoration of wellness without resorting to surgery or antibiotics.
Advanced Home Care
Even after effective treatment of oral infection, bacteria can begin to re-colonize and within days can begin attacking healthy gums. That is why vigilance in home preventive care is crucial to long-term oral health and safeguarding systemic health. Special hygiene products such as an improved electric toothbrush, an oral irrigator, anti-microbial rinse and tooth paste, as well as nutritional supplements can help control the bacteria in the mouth and aid the body’s natural immune defense system to heal from within. Our goal is to provide you with the tools to control disease-causing bacteria and plaque in the mouth, and a healthy immune system to fight infection within the body. Our improved home care system is based on research and has been proven highly successful…if you do your part at home every day.
Control Infection...Improve Your Health
By controlling the pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria in your mouth, you are making it easier for your body’s immune system to function. Constantly fighting infectious bacteria from infected gums, taxes the body’s defenses. After getting their oral infection treated, many patients will have a better chance of improving their overall health and preventing illness.
